Cathedral of San Giovanni and Chapel of the Holy Shroud
The Turin Cathedral, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, patron saint of the city, is a Renaissance architectural masterpiece built between 1491 and 1498 at the request of Cardinal della Rovere.
The cathedral, characterized by a white marble façade adorned with three portals decorated with reliefs, also houses a majestic red brick bell tower, with a crown designed by the famous architect Juvarra.
Inside the Cathedral of San Giovanni the Holy Shroud has been preserved for over four centuries, a linen sheet bearing the image of a man with signs attributable to torture compatible with a crucifixion, as described in Gospels. Many believe that the man depicted is Jesus and that the sheet is the one used to wrap his body after the crucifixion.
The interior of the Cathedral, with a Latin cross basilica plan with Gothic elements, welcomes visitors in a solemn and evocative atmosphere, inviting them to explore the history and spirituality that surround this sacred place.
